BKCR Receives Award For Teaching Sustainability |
Posted by W. Niehues (niehues) on Oct 01 2015 |
Two projects at the BKCR won the school the title "Schule der Zukunft". The campaign - created by the Natur- und Umweltschutz-Akademie NRW (Nature and Environmental Protection Academy NRW) together with North Rhine-Westphalia's ministry of environment and ministry of school - awards this title to schools that educate for sustainability.
One project takes place at the school farm and it was established ten years ago: students with the focus of educational science create learning environments for 5th grade students (ages 10-11) from a nearby comprehensive school. In these learning environments, the young students can learn about environmental protection, animals, plants, wood, crafts and cooking.
The second project is student-run fair trade shop. The students themselves run the shop, including researching the suppliers, ordering the items, taking stock, pricing, selling and accounting. This not only teaches business skills, but also raise awareness for sustainable products.
Here the article about the award and the projects in the Ruhrnachrichten newspaper of September 30, 2015:
